What began as a domestic convenience — paying a street vendor from a phone — is now a negotiating chip in trade talks. Countries adopting UPI-compatible switches gain faster remittance corridors; India gains influence over interoperability rules.

The challenge is governance: who audits fraud across borders, who sets liability when switches fail, and how open-source commitments survive vendor lobbying. DPI diplomacy only works if trust in the rails outlasts any single election cycle.
